Contemporary Chamber Music Ensemble Eighth Blackbird Performs at Cal State San Marcos

In collaboration with the La Jolla Music Society, the Cal State San Marcos Arts and Lectures series presents a concert by eighth blackbird, 5 p.m., Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, in the university’s Arts Building, Room 111. This event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Regarded as one of the premier new music groups in the world, eighth blackbird has established a reputation for provocative and engaging performances. Since its founding in 1996, the ensemble has been active in commissioning new works from eminent composers—most notably Frederic Rzewski, George Perle, and Joseph Schwantner—as well as ground-breaking works from Jennifer Higdon, Derek Bermel, David Schober, Daniel Kellogg, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, David Ludwig and the Minimum Security Composers Collective.

The winners of the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, where they were the first contemporary ensemble to win first prize, the group is also a three-time recipient of the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. The group has been featured on CBS’s “Sunday Morning” and was the subject of an extended profile in The New York Times. The ensemble is currently in residence at the University of Richmond and the University of Chicago.

Cal State San Marcos is located at 333 S. Twin Oaks Valley Road in San Marcos.  Public parking is available in all student lots for an hourly fee of $2 to $6.  More information is available at www.csusm.edu/arts_lecture or by calling 760/750-4366.
