Cal State Cross Country Teams Qualify for NAIA Nationals

The season isn’t quite over for the men’s and women’s teams at Cal State San Marcos. Both teams ran fast enough at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Regional Championships this past weekend in Fresno to qualify for NAIA Nationals, Saturday, Nov. 19, in Louisville, Kentucky. The men’s team placed third and the women’s team placed second.

Nationals will provide Escondido High graduate and freshman Thomas Thys with his debut national appearance, and will be the crowning event for senior AnneMarie Byrne.

The women’s team will consist of senior AnneMarie Byrne, who finished third overall at regionals with 17:33; junior Ava Jones, who placed fifth with 17:53; senior sisters Danae and Anna Hough; and juniors Aimee Bradley, Kristina Hill and Bonghabih Shey.

Running for the men’s team will be sophomore Sergio Gonzalez, who placed 10th at regionals; senior Tim Irwin; juniors Moises Alvarez and Eric Gustafson; sophomores Jace Getskow and Phil Hoffman; and Freshman Thomas Thys (running in place of junior Richie Gray).

The men’s team placed eighth place at nationals in 2004, and the women’s team did not qualify.
