College Assistance Migrant Program Renewed at Cal State San Marcos
The U.S. Department of Education announced it will renew a grant funding the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) for another five years at California State University San Marcos. The grant, totaling $2,118,369, was one of nine awards presented nationally. CSUSM received the first grant in 2002 in the amount of $1,975.00.
CAMP is designed to support first year university students from migrant or seasonal farm worker families. It provides first-year support services to help students develop the skills necessary to succeed in college. Fifteen CAMP students graduated from Cal State San Marcos last May, one of whom was accepted into dental school at UCLA this fall.
CAMP students are required to attend a six week summer college transition program. Summer CAMP is a six-week college transition program that provides first-year CAMP students with instruction in writing, math, study skills, and college success strategies. Summer CAMP also includes student development activities and fieldtrips designed to promote community building, leadership, and cultural awareness.
