Nursing School Director Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award
Judith Papenhausen, Ph.D., RN, director of the School of Nursing at California State University San Marcos, was named recipient of the 2007 Diane F. Cooper Lifetime Achievement Award by NurseWeek Magazine in September.
Papenhausen has been in the nursing profession since the early ’60s, serving ten years in a service setting before joining the Cal State LA School of Nursing where she served for 32 years, the last eight as chairman and program director. She joined Cal State San Marcos in 2005.
She has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from California State University, Los Angeles, and a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin where her research focused on the effects of nursing case management intervention in chronically ill older adults.
The Diane F. Cooper Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to nurses who reflect the commitment, enthusiasm and advocacy for the nursing profession that Diane Cooper exemplified. The award includes a $2500 donation made in Papenhausen’s name to the nursing organization of her choice – Flo’s Cookie Jar, an emergency fund for nursing students who have a financial crisis and are at risk of dropping from the program.
Diane Cooper was widely known and respected throughout the national nursing community in both clinical and academic arenas. Her 25-year career took her from bedside nursing at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, to clinical and educator positions at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, and finally to the undergraduate dean of admissions at the UCLA School of Nursing. Diane passed away in 1995.
