TRIBAL LIAISON NAMED AT CAL STATE SAN MARCOS

Karen S. Haynes, President of California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) announced the appointment of Tishmall A. Turner of Pauma Valley, CA as Tribal Liaison, beginning November 1, 2007. Turner will be responsible for coordinating activities that link the university to the many tribal communities in the region. She will serve on the President’s Native Advisory Council and will guide the campus on university and tribal protocols.  She will also be working with the faculty to establish a center dedicated to the study of California Indian culture and sovereignty.

"As we move toward 2010 and our vision of a community engaged campus, the Tribal Liaison is critical in helping us identify and build on the beginning partnerships we have established in these communities,” says President Haynes. “I am pleased that Tishmall Turner will be our lead on issues of tribal protocol and outreach and will help us connect in new and productive ways with our tribal neighbors."

Turner comes to CSUSM from the Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association where she served as Resource Center Program Director.  As director of the program, she networked with local higher education institutions and established collaborative efforts in various projects with local reservations. She received her MBA and bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix. She also has an accounting associate’s degree from Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Albuquerque, NM.  She is a member of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, the National Even Start Association, the National Indian Child Welfare Association, the National Indian Education Association, Valley Center Pauma School Title VII Committee, and Rincon Education Committee.

“The need for higher education in local tribal communities is severely needed. As a member of the Rincon Tribe, and living on the reservation, I have a stake in the future of my tribe and surrounding communities,” Turner says. “I am very eager to start my new position as tribal liaison at Cal State San Marcos.”
